Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects many systems of the body but is often called a “movement disorder” because of the impaired or involuntary movements it can cause. It is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world, and global estimates showed more than 8.5 million people had Parkinson’s disease in 2019. Like many health conditions, the keys to living well involve education, support and social connections with others who understand.
At Lee Health, we offer the Parkinson’s Program. Through this program, people living in Lee County diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease or related movement disorders and their care partners can connect with others and take advantage of personalized navigational support, education, movement classes, peer-to-peer enrichment groups and social opportunities. The Lee Health Parkinson’s Program is a supportive outreach program and does not provide or serve as a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. I invite you to learn more about the Parkinson’s Program by visiting our website www.LeeHealth.org/ParkinsonProgram.
Along with the support and education it provides throughout the year, the Lee Health Parkinson’s Program hosts special events, including the 2024 Fall Educational Seminar set for Friday, Nov. 22, from 12:30-4 p.m., at the Faith United Methodist Church in Fort Myers. This free educational seminar aims to energize and empower people living with Parkinson’s disease and their loved ones and caregivers with presentations from Parkinson’s disease experts, including:
- Building Your Parkinson’s Disease Rehab Team: The Power of Proactivity featuring Nathalie Grondin, PT, a Lee Health Parkinson’s specialized physical therapist
- Tips and Tricks for Care Partners with Lynne Campbell, Lee Health APRN and Parkinson’s specialist
- The Role of a Neuropsychologist in Managing Mood, Mind and Memory Changes featuring AmberRose Reale, PsyD, Lee Health neuropsychologist
