A new economic report reveals that Lee Health is a key economic driver in Lee County, supporting one of every ten jobs in the community. The findings were revealed to Lee Health’s Board of Directors after a recent study from Camoin Associates. This extensive analysis reveals that Lee Health’s ongoing operations and planned capital improvements are set to significantly boost the local economy during the next five years.
Operating four acute care facilities, two specialty hospitals, in addition to skilled nursing facilities, outpatient centers, clinics, and more than one-hundred practice locations around Lee County alone, Lee Health is a cornerstone of Southwest Florida healthcare. The health system directly supports more than 16,000 employees. This represents about two-thirds of the county's total healthcare employment, underscoring the organization’s critical role in the region.
Beyond direct employment, Lee Health’s operations have a far-reaching economic impact, contributing to the creation of 30,721 jobs across various sectors. The health system’s influence extends to earnings as well, generating more than $2.2 billion annually. These numbers highlight that 1 in 10 jobs and $1 out of every $10 in earnings within the county are supported by Lee Health’s activities, emphasizing the organization’s role as a vital economic engine for the region.
Looking ahead, Lee Health plans to invest more than $1.5 billion in capital improvements through 2028. This substantial investment is poised to create a significant one-time economic impact, generating 6,536 jobs, nearly $500 million in earnings, and $1.3 billion in sales within Lee County.
The capital improvements encompass a wide range of projects, including $1.02 billion allocated for construction and $500 million earmarked for routine capital expenditures. A significant portion of these investments will be sourced from local businesses, further stimulating the regional economy and supporting the growth of local enterprises.
“Lee Health is committed not only to providing exceptional healthcare but also to support our community through growth and development. This study underscores the critical role that Lee Health plays in Southwest Florida and the ripple effect it creates for others, contributing to the overall economic vitality of Lee County,” said Dr. Larry Antonucci, President and CEO of Lee Health.
