What is an emergency action plan and why does it matter?

Here are some key components to include in your emergency action plan:

1. Evacuation plan: Identify safe evacuation routes from your home or workplace, and designate a meeting place outside of the affected area where you can all gather.

2. Emergency contact information: Create a list of emergency contacts, including family members, friends, and emergency services. Make sure each member of your family has a copy of this list.

3. Emergency supplies: Gather emergency supplies such as food, water, prescription medication refills, and first-aid kits. Make sure everyone knows where these supplies are located.

4. Communication plan: Establish a communication plan that outlines how you will stay in touch with each other during an emergency, including backup methods such as text messaging or social media.

5. Practice drills: Regularly practice drills to ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency.

6. Have an Out-of-Town Contact to keep in touch with family members who may be separated during an emergency. This person can serve as a point of contact for family members to check in and report their whereabouts.

7. Identify a shelter-in-place location inside your home and a sick room can be especially important during natural disasters and emergencies such as a hurricane. 

8. Identify emergency meeting places outside your home to help ensure that family members can quickly reunite in the event of an emergency.

9. Be familiar with your employer's and your child's school or daycare's emergency plans.
