AssessRX Clinical Judgment System
Nursing Education:
AssessRX Clinical Judgment System
In recognition of the unique talents, skills, and experience each employee brings to Lee Health, the AssessRX Clinical Judgment System (CJS) has been implemented as a key strategy to assess, develop, validate, and retain the best caregivers available. AssessRX CJS was formally called PBDS, and Lee Health has used it since 2002. The AssessRX CJS is a standardized, individualized assessment program that:
- Provides clinical staff the opportunity to demonstrate their capacity to perform patient care in a safe, effective, and efficient manner
- Identifies learning and performance improvement opportunities to assist clinical staff in successful implementation and development of their role
- Facilitates accountability for quality patient care
During the first week of orientation, an online assessment of the newly hired nurse’s performance, in the key areas of critical thinking and interpersonal skills, will be completed. This assessment will guide the development and implementation of an individualized orientation plan tailored to meet the nurse’s specific needs. The clinical coach, who is a specially trained preceptor, will validate technical skills on the unit. The success of the nurse’s orientation plan is based on the nurse’s active involvement in the learning process and is supported by the director, supervisor, educator and the clinical coach assigned to assist the newly-hired nurse as a new employee.
At Lee Health, we recognize our employees are our most important asset and clinical competence is directly linked to our ability to pursue nursing excellence, minimize risk, and ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.
AssessRX CJS FAQs
Is this a test that I might fail?
AssessRX CJS is an assessment and not a test. Since this is not a typical multiple choice test, there is a not a failing grade. Results of the assessment fall along a continuum, and they help educators design an individualized orientation plan.
If I do not perform well on the assessment, will I still have a job?
For full-time, part-time and PRN nursing staff, performance on the AssesRX CJS assessment will not determine if a nurse remains employed. Validation of critical thinking, interpersonal and technical skills is completed, during direct patient care, by the clinical coach. The AssessRX CJS provides a baseline of performance, which assists the educator in developing an individualized orientation plan.
What is the format of the AssessRX CJS assessment?
The assessment is completed at a computer while online. Most nurses complete the timed assessment in 2 and 1/2 to 4 hours. Basically, nurses are provided with both written and video vignette case scenarios to which they must respond by typing in what actions they would take.
Can I or study for the AssessRX CJS assessment?
There is no way to study or prepare for the assessment. Nurse responses will be based on their past experiences.
I am interested in the newly-licensed Nurse Residency Program at Lee Health. As a new nurse, do I also need to take the AssessRX CJS assessment?
Yes, all newly-hired nurses, providing direct patient care, must complete the assessment. The raters, who read the responses and provide the development plan, will know if the nurse is experienced or newly-licensed, and they will take this into account when providing the development plan.
When will I be notified of how I performed on the AssessRX CJS?
Typically, about 1 to 2 weeks after taking the assessment, an educator will provide a 30-minute feedback session and review the nurse’s development plan.
