Ring that bell, Princess Sophia! We are so happy to announce that Sophia finished her inpatient chemotherapy!

sophia-thumbnail-2.jpgFor almost a year this little 4-year-old, full of laughter and fun, has been in the fight of her life. Sophia was diagnosed last September with Wilms Tumor, a cancer of the kidney. It was stage 4.

She had surgery to remove the tumor and immediately began tough rounds of inpatient chemotherapy followed by a series of radiation and more chemo.

The nurses say she calls Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida her second home.

Her mom says that she gets so excited to come to Golisano, and she packs her bag full of princess outfits, wigs and toys and says she’s “got to go see her friends in child life.”

She loves the nurses and doctors, and they’ve become a true second family. The Hematology/Oncology Unit affectionately calls her the real Princess Sophia and the Warrior Princess for how tough of a fighter she is.

Sophia's bell ringing means the end of inpatient hospital stays for overnight chemo treatments. While in remission, Sophia will have one more outpatient chemo and then be truly done with treatment.

Ringing the bell is a rite of passage for all patients when completing their cancer treatment. Congratulations, Princess Sophia!
