Lee Health Conversion Approved: A New Chapter for Our Community

On October 7 and 28 respectively, the Lee Health Board of Directors and the Board of County Commissioners voted to approve the Mission Agreement, marking the final step in the conversion process, and clearing the path for Lee Health to finalize its conversion to a community-focused nonprofit organization. This decision represents a significant step forward in our commitment to enhancing healthcare for the residents of Lee County.

Through this action, Lee Health affirms our commitment to caring for our community’s most vulnerable residents now and in the future. By transitioning to a community-focused nonprofit, we can better secure the resources needed to uphold our safety-net mission and ensure continued delivery of exceptional healthcare for the residents of Lee County.

The conversion will officially take effect on Nov. 1, 2024. With this transition, Lee Health will continue to operate with the same dedication to quality care, but with even more flexibility to address the evolving needs of our patients and community.

This decision ensures a bright future for Lee County, allowing us to focus on strengthening our services, expanding access to care and fostering innovation. We are grateful for the support of our community and are excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.

Thank you for trusting us to care for you and your loved ones. Together, we are building a healthier future for all.

Conversion is a Win for Lee County

Conversion will help to ensure a financially strong and resilient Lee Health which supports a vibrant community in Lee County.

As the largest employer in Lee County employing nearly 16,000 staff members and providing more than 2.6 million patient encounters per year, the opportunities conversion provides will help to secure Lee Health’s standing in the community long-term.

Stability for Lee Health supports its ability to provide the safe, high-quality care this community has come to expect from its health system for generations to come.

Lee Health embraces its role as the safety-net provider in Lee County. Through a contractual commitment with Lee County, Lee Health will formalize its position of caring for patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Conversion will enhance Lee Health’s flexibility and help ensure that the productive partnership that Lee Health enjoys with Lee County and its residents continues. This includes working together in innovative ways with EMS, police and fire, schools, housing and homeless authorities, veteran services and more.

Lee Health will continue to be managed and governed by local leaders committed to its not-for-profit mission.

The new business structure will include representation from across the community.

A new governance structure will enable Lee Health to compete fairly in a dynamic and challenging healthcare economy, which can help enhance and diversify programs, services and community access points to meet patients where they need care.

It is of the utmost importance to Lee Health and Lee County that we ensure robust oversight of the commitments made in the Mission Agreement. Lee County has proposed appointing an auditor, chosen by and reporting to the County as the method that would allow them to provide the best possible oversight. Lee Health fully supports this recommendation. The auditor’s role will be to verify that Lee Health is fulfilling the promises made in the Mission Agreement and upholding its commitments to Lee County and its residents.
