What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones are a collection of hard mineral buildup that forms inside your kidneys. There are many causes of kidney stones including lifestyle factors, being overweight, diet, and certain medications or supplements. As the stones develop, it can affect your urinary tract including the kidneys, bladder, urethra, and ureters.
Are there different types of kidney stones?
Not all kidney stones are made the same. There are four main types of kidney stones:
- Calcium stones - this type is the most common kidney stone. The stone formation process happens when calcium combines with oxalate in the urinary tract.
- Uric acid stones - diet and lifestyle choices may include consuming foods with high compounds of purines. It can develop in people with gout, diabetes, or obesity.
- Struvite stones - can develop in people with urinary tract infections (UTIs) and can result from a kidney infection.
- Cystine stones - a rare genetic disorder that tends to run in families.
