Hi there, welcome to Shipley Cardiothoracic Centers video meant to help you understand The few things you need to remember now that you have had a Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation. Once your surgeon determines that you're ready for discharge, nursing will get your paperwork ready and you'll go home. Please make sure there is someone there to drive you home. These are the important things to remember once you get home. It's very important that you weigh yourself every day for the first few weeks and keep a record of your daily weight. This will help to identify any excess fluid buildup early on. Along those same lines, put down that salt shaker. Adding salt to your food increases the chances that you will build up excess fluid in your body. Avoid junk food and fried food as well, as they're all heavy with salt. Having multiple medications can be confusing but it is important to take your medicines as prescribed. If you have questions, please call the office. You may have some intermittent bouts of atrial fibrillation that are short-lived/, this is normal after a maze procedure. If these bouts become prolonged or cause you to be dizzy or short of breath please call the office. We ask that you have someone at home with you for the first few days, you may feel a little weak and tired and it will be helpful to have someone there. it is important that you keep all your scheduled visits. We want to keep a close eye on you to make sure you are progressing as expected.
