A Minimally Invasive Approach to Hip Surgery Thanks to the ROSA Robot

Independent Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. John Thompson said hip arthritis is one of the most common reasons he sees patients. “They want to walk, they want to go to the gym, and exercise, play golf, pickleball, whatever they want to do. Sometimes arthritis you think of it as an older person’s slow process, but sometimes it can be really quick, or someone’s totally fine and three months later, they’re limping around.”

It’s due to damage cartilage in the hip joint. “The cartilage we have in our joints kind of keeps everything moving smooth and slippery like it should be, but over time, that cartilage starts to get thinner and thinner and when it gets to a point where causes a lot of inflammation into the joint, you get stiffness, pain, even less motion sometimes,” said Dr. Thompson.

Hip replacement surgeries have been very effective for a long time, but now they’re even better thanks to technology like Lee Health’s state-of-the-art ROSA robot. “The parts we put in are in the exact perfect spot, within 1° or 1 mm of where you want them. This thing can kind of confirm that. Instead of us just looking at it with our eyes, we have a checks and balances system to confirm that what we think we see is accurate,” said Dr. Thompson.

The ROSA machine’s robotic arm acts like an extra assistant to help guide things, so they’re exactly where they need to be. “The advantage to go through all that is it should be less painful afterwards. The recovery should be quicker. We’re trying to get people back to what they wanted to do before their hip started bothering them, as fast as we can with the least amount of complication,” said Dr. Thompson.

Hip replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can relieve your pain, increase motion, and help you get back to enjoying normal, everyday activities

Before surgery

Your preoperative experience will be like that of most total hip patients. But, unlike traditional hip replacement methods, with ROSA® Hip, a series of x-rays may be used to create a three-dimensional (3D) model of your hip anatomy. This 3D model will enable the surgeon to plan specifics of your hip replacement surgery completely customized to you prior to your surgery.

During surgery

The surgical procedure using ROSA® Hip is similar to traditional total hip replacement, but with a robotic assistant. Your surgeon has been specially trained to use ROSA® Hip in order to personalize the surgical approach for your unique anatomy. The robot does not operate on its own, it does not move unless your surgeon prompts it to. This helps ensure that the plan your surgeon put into place is executed as intended. Throughout your surgery, ROSA® Hip provides your surgeon with data about your hip which helps your surgeon know how to position your implant based on your unique anatomy.

After surgery

Following surgery, you will be hospitalized based upon the recovery plan your surgeon decides is best for you. Recovery time varies, but most people should be able to drive after two weeks. Your surgeon will tell you when and what activities you can return to, and what activities to avoid.
