Safe Sitter is designed to prepare students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. The instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises.  Students even get to use manikins to practice rescue skills, like choking rescue and CPR!

  • Safety Skills: Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.
  • Child Care Skills: Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.
  • First Aid & Rescue Skills: Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.
  • Life & Business Skills: The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.

Safe@Home (Grades 4-6)

Safe@Home is designed to be a 90-minute program for students in grades 4-6. It provides students with important safety training that will help students be prepared to stay home alone.

Staying home alone is an important part of growing up, and it can be an exciting but scary experience.  A child at home without any adult supervision for any length of time must know the following:

How to keep themselves safe indoors, outdoors, online, and with others

What to do in an emergency, including who to call for help

How to keep from getting hurt and actions to take if they get hurt

Completing this program does not mean that a student is ready to stay home alone. Only the student’s parents can make that decision, based on the age, maturity, skills, experience, and confidence level of their child. However, this program will help students learn about how to practice safe habits, how to handle common household emergencies, and how to address illness or injury.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education and prevention tool – it improves the public’s knowledge of mental health and substance use problems and connects people with care for their mental health or substance use problems. People who enroll in local Mental Health First Aid courses learn a five-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors and others cope with mental health or substance use problems. Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves. Participants must be 18 years or older to take this course.
