About the Fontan Procedure
Developed in 1971, the Fontan procedure has significantly improved the chances of survival and quality of life for children born with single-ventricular heart defects. This procedure enables all the deoxygenated (blue) blood returning to the heart to enter the pulmonary artery, significantly enhancing the oxygen levels in the blood.
The Fontan Clinic at Lee Health specializes in providing follow-up testing and care for pediatric patients who have undergone the Fontan procedure, regardless of where it was initially performed. Referrals can be made by doctors or cardiologists to ensure comprehensive and specialized care for these individuals. While most patients now reach adulthood with good health, lifelong monitoring is crucial to detect and treat potential complications that may affect various organs.
