Exercise with Caution

  • Check your blood pressure prior to exercise. If your blood pressure
  • (BP) is greater than 170/100 mm Hg, or less than 90/60 mm Hg, or outside of your normal blood pressure range do NOT exercise. A glass of water can help with high or low BP so assess for dehydration and recheck BP. Then contact your physician if your BP is still out of your normal range. 
  • If diabetic, monitoring your blood sugar is important prior to exercise. 
  • If blood glucose levels are low (less than 100 mg/dl), consume a snack of at least 15g of carbohydrates prior to exercise. 
  • Avoid exercising within one hour of a meal. 
  • Do not drink alcohol within 1 to 2 hours prior to exercise. 
  • Avoid straining your muscles and do not hold your breath while performing any exercises. 
  • Holding your breath and straining during an exercise can cause an effect called the Valsalva Maneuver and is contraindicated. To avoid the Valsalva Maneuver, exhale through the strenuous part of the exercise.

Warning Signs

  • Signs of over exhaustion include nausea or vomiting after exercise, prolonged breathlessness, or excessive fatigue or insomnia.
  • Stop exercising immediately and seek medical attention if you experience an irregular pulse, chest pain, dizziness, cold sweat or a feeling of confusion during exercise.
  • Don’t forget to stay hydrated!
