Osteoarthritis

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis, or OA, is a common condition that causes joints to become stiff and painful, making it harder to move comfortably. Our team is here to support you with personalized care, treatments, and advice that help you stay active and reduce discomfort.

Osteoarthritis happens when the protective cartilage on the ends of bones wears down over time. This causes bones to rub against each other, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints. OA is often called “wear-and-tear” arthritis because it commonly affects older adults or people who have used their joints heavily over the years.

Common Symptoms of OA

Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but it’s most common in the knees, hips, lower back, and hands. Typical signs include:

  • Joint Pain and Stiffness – Pain is usually worse after activity or at the end of the day.
  • Reduced Range of Motion – Joints may feel stiffer and harder to move.
  • Swelling and Tenderness – The area around the joint can feel sore or swollen.
  • Grating Sensation – You might feel or hear a crackling sound when you move the joint.
  • Bone Spurs – Small bumps of bone can form around the joint, which may be visible or felt under the skin.

If you notice these symptoms, our team can provide a full evaluation and work with you to create a plan to manage your OA effectively.

Treatment Options for Osteoarthritis

Our goal is to help you manage symptoms, reduce pain, and keep you moving comfortably. We offer a variety of treatment options, including:

  • Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or NSAIDs can help reduce pain and swelling.
  • Topical Treatments: Gels, creams, or patches can be applied directly to the sore joint for targeted relief.
  • Injections: For some people, injections of corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid can relieve pain and improve joint movement.
  • Physical Therapy: Our physical therapists design exercises that help strengthen the muscles around your joints, increase flexibility, and improve your range of motion. These exercises are low-impact to avoid further wear and tear.

Our Rehabilitation and Occupational Therapy team helps you find ways to make daily tasks easier on your joints, recommending tools or adjustments to improve comfort and function.

  • Exercise and Weight Management: Regular, gentle exercise, like swimming or walking, can help reduce stiffness and improve movement. Maintaining a healthy weight also reduces stress on your joints.
  • Dietary Guidance: Eating a balanced diet with anti-inflammatory foods may help manage symptoms.
  • Emotional Support: Living with OA can impact your quality of life. Our Lee Health Behavioral Health team offers counseling, support groups, and other resources to help you cope with pain and maintain a positive outlook.
