(upbeat music) Hi my name is Damien Maxwell, I’m a General Pediatric Surgeon. So as a General Pediatric Surgeon we deal with the spectrum of conditions from birth even anti-natal counseling through adolescence and young adulthood and we do general and thoracic surgery so a lot of anomalies within the chest, hernias, gallbladders, and things within the abdomen are kind of our bread and butter. My Dad is a Neonatologist, a Newborn Interventionist, and we have a lot of family members who are physicians so I naturally gravitated towards medicine and then focused on pediatrics because I liked working with kids. [Reporter off camera: Did you follow him around a lot as a child?] Oh yeah, when I was in high school I would shadow him in the hospital we’d spend the night in the hospital, and observe procedures, and so on. I’m kind of easy-going, I’m a straight shooter. I’m not going to sugarcoat things, I’m going to tell them like it is and I try and manage their expectations as best I can so that everybody’s on the same page because the children do very well but it’s the parents that take a little time and getting to know them and having them understand what their child can be going through and putting them at ease. I take care of two kids. My son’s 11 and my daughters seven, we like to go boating and fishing and enjoy the south Florida environment. (upbeat music)
