Frequently Asked Questions Related to Robotic Assisted Surgery

Compared to traditional open surgery, Robotic Assisted Surgery allows the surgeon to control precision guided instruments during the procedure. The robot can move more precise compared to a human’s hand. These complex movements allow a high degree of dexterity for accurate surgery while in difficult sensitive points around the body. The benefits of robotic surgery may include shorter recovery time, significantly less pain, less blood loss and scarring, a faster return to normal activities and in many cases better clinical outcomes.

Robotic assisted surgery is when the surgeon operates the robot with a greater degree of accuracy and dexterity. This precision guided movements helps the patient experience less blood loss, scarring and faster return to normal daily activities.

The robot does not perform the operation without the control from the surgeon. The surgeon goes through extensive training to become familiarized with the robotic arms movements. The surgeon’s hands guide the robot’s arms during the surgery to precise movements inside the human body.

Lee Health’s surgeons control the da Vinci Surgical Robot at a console. From there, they’ll operate small instruments that move like their own hands but with significantly greater accuracy and precision. They see you and their actions through a vision system which delivers a clear 3D view of the surgical area that can be magnified to 10x what the human eye can see.

The advantages of robotic surgery may include shorter recovery time, significantly less pain, less blood loss and scarring, a faster return to normal activities and in many cases better clinical outcomes.

Recipients of robotic surgery have shortened hospital stays when compared to procedures done by hand. The accuracy of robotic surgery allows our doctors to make incisions as small as possible allowing you to return to normal daily activities faster. Of course, recovery times differ depending on the type of surgery you're receiving. If you’d like to know the average recovery time for your specific procedure, ask your surgeon!

A benefit of robotic surgery is that these procedures are minimally invasive and cause significantly less pain. They enable our expert surgeons to operate with such a high degree of accuracy that the size of incisions are minimized. Smaller cuts heal faster, so patients receiving robotic surgery will be in less pain overall.
