Complete Memory & Cognition Evaluation

When assessing memory loss, it is critical to have a complete evaluation to rule out any treatable conditions. A variety of manageable conditions—including stroke, vascular disease, toxins, nutritional deficiencies, infections and depression—can affect memory and cognition.

These conditions vary from Alzheimer’s disease, which has symptoms that can be managed, but has no cure. A thorough evaluation by the Memory Care team of specialists—which includes geriatric providers and a neuropsychologist—can determine if dementia is a factor in changes in behavior.

Memory Care Frequently Asked Questions

Memory Care Programs ensure your loved one is engaged and social through activites. Activites play a vital role in memory care by promoting cognitive function. These activties are designed to create meaningful connections through allowing your loved one to enage with others and maintain a sense of purpose.

Memory care changes as your loved one ages as they may not be able to complete the tasks they used to. The older the patient is, typically the more memory care intervention they would need. Memory care will grow and change with your loved one as needed to best suite them.

Alzheimer's and Dementia can be diagnosed through:

  • Medical history and physical examination: The healthcare provider will start by taking a detailed medical history, including asking about symptoms, family history of dementia, and any other relevant medical conditions.
  • Cognitive and neuropsychological testing: Various tests and assessments may be administered to evaluate cognitive function, memory, language skills, problem-solving abilities, and other mental functions.
  • Laboratory tests: Blood tests may be conducted to rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, or infections.
  • Brain imaging: Imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans may be used to look for structural changes in the brain, such as shrinkage of brain tissue, which can be indicative of Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia.
  • Neurological evaluation: A neurological examination may be performed to assess reflexes, muscle strength, coordination, and sensory function. This helps to identify any neurological abnormalities that may be contributing to cognitive impairment.

The key differences between assisted living and memory care are safety, staff training and care, ammenities, activities and therapies, and costs. Memory care facilities have more security features to keep residents safe. Memory care communites tend to have a higher caregiver-to-resident ratio as well as staff that knows how to manage difficult memory care behaviors. While both memory care and assisted living communities provide similar ammenities, memory care communites design the layout to reduce confusion for residents. Memory care offers both group and individual memory care activities and therapies specifically designed for seniors with memory loss. Memory care communities are more expensive than assisted living because they offer specialized care and services that assisted living communites do not.
