Brain Tumor Surgery

Brain Tumor surgery is the process of removing abnormal growths in the brain. Patients with brain tumors are carefully examined before the procedure begins. The surgeon will see where the location is, tumor size, and type. Then during the procedure will carefully remove the tumor while preserving brain tissue. Our skilled Lee Health neurosurgeon team will ensure a successful operation.

Common Symptoms

Brain Tumor symptoms can vary depending on the location of the tumor. This effect can range from trouble walking, balance, coordination, and even eye-sight vision depth my occur. How large and quickly the tumor becomes also may affect a person's symptoms. That may include:

  • Seizures or Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Memory Loss
  • Confusion and Disorientation
  • Difficulty Speaking
  • Behavior Changes
  • Depth of Vision
  • Loss of Balance

Brain Tumor Treatment

For some brain tumors, surgical removal and post-operation monitoring may be the best approach. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be used to treat the tumor by shrinking its size and slowing growth. It's important to consult with your Lee Health physician to determine the next steps. Your age, health, brain tumor size, and location all are considered before surgery is performed.

How is Brain Tumor Surgery performed?

Before the surgery let your doctor know about the current supplements and medications you are taking. Certain medications or supplements can increase bleeding during surgery. Since general anesthesia is used during the procedure you will need to stop eating and drinking the night before surgery. Wear loose-fitting clothes and do not wear any makeup or jewelry. Additionally, wear glasses instead of contact lenses since you will be under for the duration of the surgery.

How long will the hospital stay be?

Typically patients who have brain surgery performed will need to stay for one to two days. This way our skilled staff can monitor you post-operation and see you are recovering normally.

Will there be Medication Prescribed Post-Surgery?

Medications are prescribed after brain surgery. The typical symptoms post-operation are pain, nausea, brain swelling, dizziness, brain fog, seizures, and stomach ulcers. The medication will help alleviate those symptoms and our care team will make sure you are taken care of after surgery.

Is Rehabilitation or Physical Therapy needed?

The need for rehabilitation or physical therapy largely depends on the location of the brain tumor. Some patients have reported little to no change in physical and cognitive abilities and therefore do not require rehabilitation or physical therapy. The day after surgery, patients are recommended to walk around but may become tired quickly and need to sit down. Feeling this way is normal and to be expected. However, some patients may notice cognitive changes such as brain fog, memory, performing tasks, paying attention, physical abilities, and changes in speech. If any of these changes occur, patients will likely need rehabilitation.

Pediatric Brain Tumor Diagnosis

If a child is experiencing brain tumor symptoms then evaluation from a pediatrician or neurologist is the best solution. The doctor can evaluate your child with an MRI scan and discuss findings with the best treatment plan approach. Our skilled Lee Health neurosurgeon team will work with the pediatrician to ensure a successful operation.
