Arts in Healthcare

What is Arts in Healthcare?

We believe in the profound impact that art can have on health and healing. Arts in Healthcare at Lee Health is part of a nationwide movement that links the expressive arts with the healing arts and provides a creative outlet for our patients, families and staff.

Arts in Healthcare Program volunteers integrate the arts into our healthcare environments to promote healing, enhance the patient experience, and support the well-being of our staff and community.

Our program also offers creative channels for expression, stress reduction and enhancement of positive thought processes, and promotes the well-being of those who are ill, along with their caregivers and enhances their overall healthcare experience.

Arts in Healthcare Programs

The Arts in Healthcare program offers four creative channels for expression in the following art programs:

Young woman standing next to a wall filled with artwork. We partner with local disABLEd artists and musicians to showcase their work and talents in the ART BY THE disABLEd galleries. With multiple galleries throughout Lee Health, the general public, patients and staff can admire and purchase the art. Proceeds from the sale benefit the artist as well as the program. In addition, we participate in local art events and host an annual juried art show.

Did you know? Each year, Lee Health hosts a calendar contest and partners with the Arts by the DisABLEd program. to receive designs for our systemwide calendar that is distributed.

ARTS BY THE disABLEd Calendar Contest deadline submission is Sept. 27 and the exhibit and voting is on Oct. 18.

Hearts Meeting membersOur HEARTS group is volunteers that enjoy getting together with like-minded people who are interested in making crafts for our patients. The crafts go on our art carts and are delivered directly to patients of all ages. Any crafting groups are encouraged to make items that are preapproved for our patients.

HEARTS Is open to all art cart volunteers and it is held on the 2nd Friday of each month from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at HealthPark Medical Center in the Boca Grande conference room.

Man sitting on a chair and playing the accordianMusic and performance can be a powerful influence and has the unique power to soothe, uplift and heal. It can bring back memories, or it can turn a patient’s attention away from discomfort. It can ease a caregiver’s long wait or create a more pleasant working environment for our staff and volunteers.

We host guest musicians, singers, actors and dancers at our hospitals as part of the monthly Art in the Park series. They work with patients of all ages, providing live music sessions, therapeutic music interventions, and personalized music experiences to aid in recovery and emotional well-being.

Our pediatric patients can visit the Music Room at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida where trained volunteers help them play musical instruments and sing songs.

Laughter and light-hearted humor help our patients through their challenges We also have storytellers that bring stories to life and brighten the imaginations of our patients.

Art-Cart-2024.jpgWe work with our patients of all ages to produce visual art that helps distract them from physical or emotional pain.Through a variety of different art mediums, our volunteers may help patients create many artful projects. However, you do not have to be an artist to make a difference in a patient’s life. We visit patients in their rooms and empower them with light-hearted conversation to uplift their spirits, and to improve their stay. We consider conversation an art, as well as a healing force.

Art cart volunteers work face to face with patients to promote expressive creativity through drawing, painting and art materials.
