Dr. Gonsenhauser fosters a culture of excellence within the Lee Health and is responsible for the continuous improvement of the safety, efficiency and quality of medical care in the Southwest Florida community. He provides oversight and strategic direction for 2,400 employed and independent physicians, and advanced providers on the health system’s medical staff.

Dr. Gonsenhauser is a relational-servant leader who views his role as that of strategist, facilitator and collaborator with medical and nursing clinicians, hospital administrative leadership and quality program leadership to provide operational and financial management in support of the health system’s mission. He is a strong workforce advocate and an active mentor who engages and supports staff to pursue their professional goals.

Professional Experience

Dr. Gonsenhauser came to Lee Health in 2023 from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, where he was the chief quality and patient safety officer. In this role, he directed and supervised quality and patient safety, patient experience and epidemiology for a seven-hospital, 1,400-bed health system.

As an expert in facilitating clinical process improvement, he restructured clinical and administrative departments to advance clinical process improvement capabilities. During the pandemic, he helped to create and direct a COVID-19 call center, which rapidly scaled to 8,000 calls each day. Additionally, he created and deployed a systemwide quality and value metric cascade strategy to engage frontline clinicians and nurses with enterprise goals.

Education

Dr. Gonsenhauser received his medical degree and completed his residency training in internal medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

He also has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology/Neuroscience from Syracuse University in New York and a Master’s Degree in Finance/Bioscience Entrepreneurship from the Case Western Reserve University Weatherhead School of Management. Before his medical training, Dr. Gonsenhauser spent six years working in the biomedical research fields of physiology, genetics and the cognitive science of aging.
