Biography

Dr. David Cervantes joined Lee Health’s Shipley Cardiothoracic Center from Emory University School of Medicine, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia. There, he completed a combined residency and fellowship training program, including advanced training in complex cardiac surgery, as well as heart failure and mechanical circulatory support. Dr. Cervantes graduated with honors in Biology from the University of Iowa. He subsequently earned his Doctorate (PhD) in Molecular and Integrative Physiology from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, where his research focused on the cell signaling pathways involved in heart failure. He then earned his Medical Degree (MD) from the University of Illinois. 

Dr. Cervantes is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and specializes in general cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive and robotic cardiothoracic surgery, complex cardiac surgery, transcatheter valve therapies, on- and off- pump coronary artery bypass, aortic surgery, and atrial fibrillation surgery. Dr. Cervantes has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in publications such as the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Circulation.
