Biography

Dr. Janine Harewood is originally from Barbados. She was the recipient of the University of West Indies Open Scholarship in Medical School and has previous research experience in breast cancer and quality improvement. Dr. Harewood has published multiple review articles, book chapters and case reports. She has also held many administrative positions throughout her career. She is an advocate for under-represented/at risk populations and a healthy lifestyle.

Meet the Doctor

My name is Dr. Janine Harewood. I'm a medical oncologist at Lee Health Cancer Institute. I'm originally from Barbados. I joined Lee Health in August of 2021 because it's an amazing organization which focuses on patients. My why for medical oncology is a little complicated. I was first attracted to this field because of hematology, and that was in medical school. When I was in training, I saw a lot of male physicians, and hematology was the first time I saw a female physician who was very confident, enjoy what she did, and I kind of wanted to model my life behind that And so, that's where it started. Obviously, things change over the years. I've had a couple of family members who've experienced cancer. I've had family members who've passed away from cancer. And so, having that personal experience is kind of what cemented my love for the specialty. So, my hobbies when I am not at work are usually hanging out with my family, mainly my husband, siblings, and parents. I love to travel. My husband is very active. And so, because of him, I've also completed a marathon, jumped out of an airplane skydiving, and completed a half-marathon in the past two years.

I moved to Lee Health after several months with Florida Cancer I was not treated well. Lee Health is Excellent when I have been a patient in the Hospital. and during my treatments.

The staff were all professional and efficient. Dr. Harewood started her examine by first listening to my questions and concerns. I appreciated knowing that my concerns were very important. She then addressed my questions, conducted a thorough exam of my record s and of me, and assured me that all indicators look good. Dr. Harewood is knowledgeable and personable. I am in good hands.

I love my oncologist Dr. Harewood. Very friendly and makes me comfortable she explains everything well and takes her time if I have any concerns. I saw her at the ft. Myers office before and it’s close to my home. Estero is a drive but I’m not giving her up.
