Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA)
What is a cardiac computerized tomography angiography (CTA) scan?
A computed tomography angiography scan is a non-invasive diagnostic exam that evaluates the heart and its surrounding blood vessels. A (CTA) scan involves contrast being injected through an IV. This helps the doctor visualize your heart, coronary arteries, and surrounding anatomy. This advanced medical imaging scan provides highly detailed cross-sectional images of the heart and identifies potential issues with the heart's structure, function, and blood flow
One common abnormality it identifies is plaque buildup, which can consist of calcium, cholesterol, or fat and may lead to conditions like coronary artery disease or heart failure. Your scan is performed by a CAT scan technologist. The scan is read by a radiologist and cardiologist. After your cardiologist has the results of your scan, they may recommend further tests or treatment.
Assessing Heart Valve Functions
Lee Health Heart Institute's cardiologists provide a comprehensive assessments of the heart's anatomy, essential valves, and evaluate how effectively the heart pumps blood, which is a critical indicator of overall heart health. This scan can detect issues related to heart valves, such as stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage), allowing healthcare providers to diagnose structural problems and valve concerns.

Heart Valve Center
The Heart Valve Center is the first of its kind in SWFL bringing together the expertise of the Shipley Cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists to provide traditional, minimally invasive and transcatheter treatment for valve disease. The highlight of the valve center is the weekly conference where a multidisciplinary panel of experts come together to make recommendations for the management of a patient’s valve disease.
Detecting Coronary Artery Disease
One of the primary applications of a cardiac CT scan is the identification of coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is characterized by the blockages or narrowing of the coronary arteries, which can restrict blood flow to the heart and pose serious risks. CTA scans are instrumental in precisely measuring and identifying these blockages, providing essential information about the severity of CAD.

Diagnostic tests, lifestyle changes, and surgical treatments to help clear your arteries and make your heart healthier.
Why do you need a cardiac (CTA) scan?
You might require a CTA if you have symptoms of cardiovascular disease or if your doctor needs more information about your heart health. Some common reasons for a scan include:
- Abnormal test results from stress testing, echocardiograms, or electrocardiograms.
- Suspected structural issues in your coronary arteries.
- Assessing the risk of developing coronary artery disease.
- Monitoring new or worsening symptoms of coronary artery disease.
- If you've had coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
A cardiac CT scan is a valuable tool for assessing your heart's health without invasive procedures, providing clear images that help in diagnosis and treatment planning.
