What is a transesophageal echocardiography?
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a specialized type of echocardiogram that provides detailed images of the heart by inserting a small ultrasound probe through your mouth to the esophagus. This allows for a closer and clearer view of the heart structures compared to a regular echocardiogram performed on the outside of the chest.
What happens during a TEE procedure?
During a TEE procedure, the patient is typically given a sedative to help them relax. A nurse then gently inserts the imaging device it into the mouth and down the esophagus. This provides real-time images of the heart's chambers, valves, and blood flow. The images obtained through TEE can help doctors assess the structure and function of the heart, detect abnormalities, and guide treatment decisions.
Why is a TEE procedure done?
TEE is commonly used to evaluate heart valve problems, heart pumping capacity, blood clots, infections, and abnormal heart rhythms. It can also be useful during certain cardiac procedures, such as guiding the placement of devices or monitoring the heart's response to interventions.
