Robotic Bariatric Surgery
What is bariatric (weight loss) surgery?
Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, helps people who are obese lose weight. If other weight loss methods have not worked, your doctor might recommend a surgical approach that can help to treat obesity. Lee Health surgeons have been trained on the state-of-the-art da Vinci™ Robotic Surgical System that can be used to perform weight loss surgery.
Who is eligible for robotic bariatric surgery?
Patients who have been working with their doctor on weight loss solutions and are obese with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of greater than 30 may be eligible. This can be done with regular laparoscopy or from a few minor incisions from the da Vinci™ robotic surgery.
What are the different types of bariatric surgery?
There are a few bariatric procedures the da Vinci™ Surgical System can perform:
- Gastric bypass- the surgeon creates a small upper pouch to divide the stomach and bypass to the lower part of the stomach.
- Gastric sleeve- the surgeon removes a large portion of the stomach. The stomach is now a "sleeve" and can hold one-tenth of its previous food capacity.
da Vinci™ Xi Surgical System
da Vinci™ Xi Surgical System
Our Lee Health surgeons use the da Vinci™ Surgical System, to operate through just a few small incisions. The da Vinci™ System features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand.
As a result, da Vinci™ enables your surgeon to perform your surgery with enhanced vision, precision, and control. Robotic bariatric surgery enables you to recover faster and with less pain than traditional open surgery.
The da Vinci® XI provides a unique and new surgical approach to very invasive traditional alternatives.
