What is a colectomy?
Colectomy, also known as colon resection, is used to treat inflammatory bowel illness (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis), colon cancer, and infections. The colon can be removed entirely or partially depending on the operation needed.

What is the difference between total and partial colectomy?
Depending on the severity of the surgery needed, you might need only a part or all of the colon removed. Your surgeon may advise one of the following procedures:
Total colectomy - The entire colon is removed during a total colectomy.
Partial colectomy - The colon is partially removed during a partial colectomy.
Sigmoid colectomy - The sigmoid colon or last section of your colon is removed, this is the section that connects to the rectum.
Hemicolectomy - The removal of one side, left or right, of your colon.
Proctocolectomy - The removal of part or all of the colon and rectum.
What happens after surgery?
Before being released from the hospital, you will recover there for a few days. Depending on the type of surgery you underwent and how well you are doing, it could be two days or even a week. At this period, you will be:
- Monitored for any indications of procedural problems
- Wean yourself off of your painkillers gradually
- Fed on a soft or liquid diet
- Awaiting the return of normal bowels function
