First Trimester (4-11 weeks)

There are three main providers who deliver babies — an obstetrician (OB/GYN), family practice physician and certified nurse midwife.

An obstetrician is a physician who specializes in high-risk and low-risk prenatal and gynecologic care. Some family practice physicians receive additional training to provide low-risk prenatal care and deliveries.

A midwife is a nurse practitioner who has additional training and specializes in low-risk prenatal care and vaginal births.

Check with your insurance plan, friends and family to select a provider who is best for you.
