What is bone cancer?
Bone cancer is a slow-developing cancer that can form in any bone in your body. When cancer cells form in the bines it can disrupt normal bone tissue. This cancer type is hard to detect since its symptoms are mainly pain in the affected area.
Bone cancer may begin to spread to other areas of the body. Bone cancer is rare and can develop at any age, however, slightly higher cases can occur in children, teens, and young adults.
Types of Bone Cancer
Comprehensive care is given to patients with bone tumors such as osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and Ewing's sarcoma by our team of oncologist specialists. There are four primary types of bone cancer:
- Osteosarcoma- the most common type of bone cancer is osteosarcoma and may start in the hips, shoulders, and other outer layers of the bones.
- Ewing's Sarcoma- the second most common type of bone cancer is Ewing's sarcoma which may start in the legs, arms, and pelvis.
- Chondrosarcoma- the least common cancer type develops in the tissue between your bones.
What are the symptoms of bone cancer?
Many patients are unaware of the early stages of bone cancer since symptoms are common aliments. When symptoms do emerge they could be confused with other conditions like Lyme disease or arthritis.
If you experience any of these symptoms it's best to talk with your doctor. Typical symptoms of bone cancer include:
- Fatigue
- Pain in your bones
- Limb swelling
- Difficulty moving
- Pain during physical activity

What is Lee Health's approach to bone cancer diagnosis?
When diagnosing bone cancer, your doctor may begin with an X-ray to see the bones. Next, an MRI and CT Scan can be used to provide a detailed image of the areas around the bones.
Once further seeing the bones, a lab biopsy may be requested to closer inspect tissue under a microscope for cancer. This will provide your doctor with more detailed insights into the stage of cancer.
