Lee Health Cancer Institute: Recognized Clinical Trials Member
Lee Health Cancer Institute is a member of the Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium (SCOR). As a member of SCOR, we are able to bring more than 150 National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored trials to our local community. In addition, we partner with other organizations to participate in research in specific areas.
What is a clinical trial?
Clinical trials for cancer are research studies to find better ways to treat and manage cancer. Often the purpose of a clinical trial is to learn if a new treatment is more effective and/or has less side effects than the standard treatment. It helps doctors evaluate whether new drug combinations are better for a patient. A clinical trial may also evaluate side effect management and prevention of specific treatments or symptoms. Studying new options for managing debilitating side effects gives hope to future patients.
For clinical trials to be most effective and beneficial, it is important to have a wide array of diversity: including men and women of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Each study specifies the eligibility criteria of who can and cannot participate – such as age, sex, or type of cancer.

- Screening trials
- Supportive trials
- Palliative Care trials

Meet Our Clinical Trials Team
Clinical Research Nurse – We are staffed with three clinical research registered nurses that specialize in cancer research. The nurses work closely with your physician to provide the most current information on clinical trials available. The Research Nurse has hands-on involvement with you; walking you through the clinical trial process, and ensuring all requirements are met.
Clinical Research Coordinator – We are staffed with a Clinical Research Coordinator who is responsible for data management. The Research Coordinator works closely with your physician, the Research Nurse, and the regulatory agencies for proper management of data, ensuring all data is accurately entered in the required time frame along with staying updated on changes or edits to a study.
Clinical Research Pharmacist – We are staffed with a Clinical Research Pharmacist who is responsible for the oversight and management of medications associated with the various trials. The Research Pharmacist works closely with the Research Nurses and your physician, along with regulatory agencies ensuring safety and compliance as it relates to the pharmacologic aspects of the trials.
